ADVOCACY
Two FAIA members elected to the Florida Senate
FAIA had the most successful election cycle in recent history, with 61 of the 63 candidates receiving financial support from FAIA’s political action committees winning their races. Better still, two FAIA members—Doug Broxson from Milton and Kevin Rader from Boca Raton—won their Senate races. Read Kyle Ulrich’s General Election recap.
Looking to hire soon? Options—and even grants—are available
Four state colleges will begin offering insurance specialization associate degree programs next year, bringing the total to nine. While FAIA’s workforce development program is sure to create new talent pools, there are several options available for agencies that need to hire now, some of which are free or can be funded through grants. EDUCATION
Upcoming webinar to focus on Citizens updates, changes
Dave Newell hosts Citizens Director of Agent Services Carl Rockman for a wide-ranging discussion of topics including: legacy commissions and renewal fees; tips and tricks for new business processing; depopulation changes for 2017; and much more. The webinar, which is free, takes place Wednesday, November 29, 10:00–11:00 a.m. Register.
When plans fall apart: Event cancellation protection
Hurricane Matthew caused many agents to ponder event cancellation coverage (fortunately for fans but maybe not for the players, the FSU-Miami game was not cancelled). There is no ISO standard for this coverage, so agents need to pay special attention to the details. Read Keith Jones’ blog for some of the hard-and-fast rules for placing coverage.
Improve your agency’s operations 15 minutes at a time
The Best Practices for Agency Operations webinar series winds down Dec. 14 with a presentation on producer recruitment and development. Since March, the free series from the Big "I" and Reagan Consulting has provided informative 15-minute sessions to explain how the study's metrics can help agencies improve performance. Register for the final session, and catch up with recordings of previous sessions.
MARKETING
Digital marketing, emerging channels top concerns for agents
Independent agents rated marketing the agency effectively on the Internet as the top technology challenge in the recently released Agency Universe Study. Read Paul Peeples’ blog for the Agency Council for Technology’s overview of the technology portion of the study. Visit Independent Agent magazine online to read a primer on the overall study, where agents cited emerging purchase channels as their top concern in 2016.
EVENTS
Carl Hiaasen confirmed for Convention General Session
General Session during the 113th Annual Convention & Education Symposium (June 8-10 at the Gaylord Palms Resort) is shaping up to be an interesting contrast in styles. Florida-born newspaper columnist, satirist, and award-winning novelist Carl Hiaasen will share his sharp wit and wisdom, and highly-decorated Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill will translate his elite SEAL team training into actionable insights on leadership and decision-making. Read Cindy Molnar’s blog for a Convention preview, then register and book your room.

Don’t let this Agents Confidential be your last
If you’re reading this and your agency hasn’t yet renewed its membership, this may be the last time the Agents Confidential appears in your inbox. That’s because agencies that did not renew their membership by Nov. 1 are in the process of being dropped. Access to members-only portions of the website (blogs, the Education Library, etc.) ends this week. Contact Membership Director Melissa Weaver if your agency would like to renew.
IN MEMORIAM
Herbert G. Treweek
We extend our sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Herb Treweek, who, at the age of 90, passed away October 24, 2016. Herb started his insurance career with Nationwide Insurance as an underwriter and went on to work for Safeco Insurance Co. as an underwriting manager before joining the Cannon-Treweek Agency in 1971. At the agency, he served as vice president, president, and chairman of the board and CEO. He taught numerous classes for FAIA in the 70s and 80s, helped develop Florida’s first insurance continuing education law, and served on many FAIA committees and as chairman of the board. Herb served on the boards of several other insurance organizations, including as the president of the Gainesville Association of Insurance Agents. In 1987, he was elected FAIA’s State National Director. Herb was a consummate professional and his talents will be missed. Read more about his life in the Gainesville Sun.
