Chris Heidrick receives 2014 Chairman’s Award

Heidrick_CChris Heidrick, CPCU, CFP®, ANFI, principal of Heidrick & Company Insurance in Sanibel, is the 2014 recipient of the Chairman's Award. The award recognizes an FAIA member whose attitude, spirit, and efforts inspire others to be their best.

Chris is one of very few insurance agents nationwide to hold the Associate in Flood Insurance designation. Over the past few years, Chris has educated more than 2,000 Florida agents about flood insurance. He’s taught several BW12 classes and webinars with David Thompson, and has taught at the national level for IIABA.

Most recently, Chris and David teamed up just nine days after President Obama signed the new “Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act” into law to offer an updated webinar to members.

IRMA Award winner: Lynn White

/uploadedImages/FAIA_Site_Home/About/Staff_bios/Lynn_001_web.pngLynn White, senior RLI account manager for FAIA Member Services, is the 2014 recipient of the Irma Platt Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is named for long-serving Hugh Cotton Insurance Agency employee Irma Platt and recognizes those whose enthusiasm, ethics, and integrity make it possible for principals, CSRs, and producers to best serve their policyholders.

Lynn is responsible for handling all of the activities associated with FAIA Member Services' RLI program, including issuing all new business policies, endorsements, handling phone calls and questions from agents, and setting agents up with access to the RLI system.

Her insurance career began in Columbus, Ohio, in the home office of Nationwide Insurance. After taking time to be a stay-at-home mom, she accepted a position at The Ohio State University, where she started a Bachelor of Science degree in Management; she finished her degree after moving to Florida.

Lynn has worked in Ohio and Florida for companies writing professional liability insurance for hospitals, attorneys, and doctors. Upon her retirement, Lynn started working at FAIA.

New officers, board members elected at 110th Convention

FAIA Installed new officers and board members, and gave thanks to its outgoing board members during its Business Breakfast, held in conjunction with the 110th Anniversary Convention & Education Symposium, on June 21, 2014.

New Officers   

  • Jeff Schlitt, CPCU, CFP, vice president and commercial department manager of Schlitt Insurance Services in Vero Beach, was elected chairman;
  • Chip Greene, president and CEO of Jacksonville-based Greene-Hazel Insurance Group, was elected chairman-elect; and
  • Brian R. Scarborough, CIC, REBC, vice president and co-owner of Scarborough Insurance in Gainesville, was elected vice-chairman. 

New Board Members  

  • Mike Alvarez, CPIA, PIAM, managing partner and vice president of BenTrust AIB, LLC in Miami;
  • Dan R. Alexander, CIC, vice president and partner, ThompsonBaker Agency, Inc. in St. Augustine; and
  • Lindsey A. Shank, CIC, assistant agency manger of BB&T–Iler Wall & Shonter Insurance in St. Petersburg. 

Board members serve a three-year term, from 2014 to 2017

Young Agents Council announces new leadership, award winners

2014YacAwardsYoung agents who exemplify professionalism and ethical behavior were honored Friday during the invitation only Young Agents Council luncheon held in conjunction with FAIA’s 110th Anniversary Convention and Education Symposium:

  • Young Agent of the Year—Jason Levine (pictured, far right) with Harry Levine Agency
  • Young Agent Company Partner of the Year—Wright Flood 
  • Young Agent Associate Individual of the Year—Chad LaTour (pictured, second from left), Wright Flood

Also during the luncheon, the 2014-2015 YAC Executive Committee was announced. Officers are:

  • Chair—Karyn Roeling with the Seibert Agency in Tampa
  • Chair-Elect—Matt Ostrander with Lassiter-Ware Insurance in Maitland
  • Vice-Chair—Brandon Butler with Butler Buckley & Deets of Miami

Tom Cotton receives Mitchell Stallings Award

CottonStallingsAwardFor his faithful and selfless service to FAIA, its members, the insurance industry, and his community, Tom Cotton is the recipient of the 2014 Mitchell Stallings Memorial Award—the highest honor FAIA bestows.

The award is given in memory of FAIA Past Chairman Mitchell Stallings and recognizes a lifetime of leadership, integrity, and service to the industry.

Tom has served in many leadership roles, not only in FAIA, but also in IIABA and his local association. He served on numerous task forces and committees, including the Good Works Fund, FAIAPAC board of directors, the Trusted Choice Task Force, chairman of the Panel on Membership & Dues Structure, the Legislative Council, FAIA’s Finance Committee, and the Workers’ Compensation Task Force, just to name a few. Recognizing his devotion, character, integrity, and passion for FAIA, his colleagues named Tom chairman of the FAIA Board of Directors in 2001. Following his term as chairman, Tom served as national director for a six-year term.

Tom is dedicated to his community and his church. He has served as chairman of the Orlando Jaycees Junior Fishing Tournament, chairman of the Boone High School Business Advisory Board, a Certified Insurance Council mentor, and a volunteer for the Orange County School Board Additions. He serves on the board of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church in Orlando.

Good Works Fund endows Bob Ross Scholarship

/uploadedImages/FAIA_Site_Home/Media_Center/Ross_Bob.jpgThanks to contributions from companies, agencies, and individuals, FAIA’s Good Works Fund Committee has raised the $100,000 needed to endow a scholarship in the name of legendary FAIA educator Bob Ross.

The fundraising effort begin at the 2013 FAIA Convention with substantial contributions from the Ross family and BB&T Insurance Services. Nearly $10,000 was raised during the Convention for the scholarship fund, and the momentum continued throughout the year. Special thanks go to Legacy donors Sam Rogers, Jr., FCCI Services, and Safeco Insurance; and Founder donors Continental Casualty Company (CNA) and Main Street America Group. Reaching the endowment goal ensures that a $5,000 scholarship can be awarded in perpetuity to bright and energetic students pursuing a career in the independent agency system.

FAIA recognizes Frontline with the Trusted Choice Company of the Year award

Frontline Insurance has been named FAIA’s 2014 Trusted Choice® Company of the Year. The award recognizes a company doing business in Florida that does an outstanding job of living the Trusted Choice brand. 

Frontline was Florida’s first domestic insurance company to join Trusted Choice. The company joined in February 2008 after actively pursuing partner status and working with Trusted Choice for three years to make it happen.

Frontline received the award at the Trusted Choice Appreciation lunch held in conjunction with FAIA’s Convention & Education Symposium.

Schlitt Insurance Services' Paula Morgan receives National Alliance customer service award

Paula_MorganPaula Morgan with Schlitt Insurance Services has been named Florida’s 2014 Outstanding Customer Service Representative (OCSR) of the Year by the National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research. The prestigious award recognizes the contributions and commitment of those who serve clients within the insurance industry.

Paula is now eligible to compete for the national honor, which carries a $2,000 cash award, a gold and diamond pin, $1,000 cash award for the nominator, and a scholarship for the recipient’s employer to any program offered by The National Alliance.

To qualify for the top state honor, 2014 candidates submitted an essay on the following topic:

“It is generally agreed that both new and renewal business are crucial to the success of an agency. Explain whether new business or renewal business is more important to the long-term value and profitability of an agency. Identify four ways a CSR, Account Executive, or Account Manager can have a meaningful impact on the new and/or renewal business written by their agency.” 

Additionally, entrants must have demonstrated commendable service to their agencies, their industry, and their community.

FEMA, NFIP hosting post-disaster briefing for agents

The NFIP Bureau and Statistical Agent will conduct a briefing for Panhandle-area insurance agents to address the flooding issues resulting from the recent rainstorms. FEMA says it is important that agents and their staff attend the meeting to receive updated information so that they can better assist clients.

Briefing topics include: 

  • NFIP overview
  • Disaster updates
  • Post-disaster insurance requirements
  • Insurance coverage issues
  • Increased cost of compliance
  • Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act overview 

The meeting takes place on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Pensacola Bay Center, 201 E. Gregory St. in Pensacola.

The briefing is free, but seating is limited, so plan to arrive early.
