Florida SouthWestern State College hosted FAIA's Town Hall meeting in Ft. Myers on October 31, 2018. During the reception, FAIA presented Dr. Psihountas, right, a $5,000 check from the Good Works Fund in support of the college's new Risk Management & Insurance associate degree program. |
The insurance industry in Florida is growing. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity estimates the industry will add more than 6,000 new jobs per year through 2025. In addition, more than 8,500 positions will be left open by retiring workers in the same timeframe.
In response to this current trend, FAIA formed workforce development partnerships with colleges throughout the state to promote risk management and insurance associate degree programs.
"Florida SouthWestern State College is excited to be a part of this partnership," said Dr. Debbie Psihountas, dean of FSW’s School of Business and Technology.
Beginning with the Spring 2019 semester, students who are enrolled in FSW’s in business administration and management associate degree can choose to follow the risk management track. This track includes three risk management courses that will provide students with the necessary education to enter the insurance industry upon graduation. Students who complete the program will have earned their associate degree, a college credit certificate in risk management and insurance, and as an added bonus, they will be waived from the state-mandated insurance licensing exams and will be licensed by the state of Florida.
FAIA's Good Works Fund donated $5,000 to support student scholarships, and the local agent community is committed to providing internships and mentorship opportunities.
