Every FAIA agency member is assigned a Member Advocate (MA) to be their direct point of contact at the association. No matter what your question, our MAs can help. BG Murphy, a father of two and Lakeland, FL native, is our Director of Government Affairs. We sat down with BG and talked to him about the best parts of his job, the most common question he gets from members, and why quiet time is his favorite thing.
BG Murphy
Director of Government Affairs
Years with the association: 2 years
Hometown: Lakeland, Fla.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Spoiler alert: my favorite part of my job is interacting with the association’s members. I work to make sure the voices of Florida’s insurance agents are heard on legislative and regulatory issues and getting to hear about FAIA’s members’ experiences is what gives me the information and tools I need to help the association be successful.
What’s the most common question you get from your members?
The most common question I receive from members is, “What can I do to get more involved in the "legislative process?” Agents have different levels of comfort and willingness to engage, so it’s a question that I get asked a lot.
What do you wish more members knew about FAIA?
We have one of the best professional teams that I’ve ever been a part of. I think it’s good to know that, while we have individuals in specific roles at the association, anyone at FAIA is willing to take a call and help our members. Even if you can’t get a hold of a specific person, you can always call someone else and they’ll help you.
What’s your favorite FAIA Event?
Capitol Days! The event provides an opportunity for those who may not be as knowledgeable or don’t have the same level of experience with the legislative process to see that it’s not as intimidating as they may have thought and find out firsthand how much their involvement affects the process. There’s really nothing more impactful than a legislator hearing from their constituents and local businesses in their district.
Who has made the biggest impact on your career up to this point?
I have two: The first is my father. I got my work ethic from him. He worked for the school board for 42 years and went from being a janitor to assistant superintendent of the school district. He always instilled in me the importance of working and doing a good job at what you do. The second is former Chief Financial Officer of Florida Jeff Atwater. He helped me fine-tune my skills in the political process. He has been, in my opinion, one of the most influential elected officials I’ve worked with and he has taught me a lot of valuable and effective lessons that shaped my thought process and how I pursue advocacy.
What do you do for fun?
I (attempt to) play golf, I do carpentry, spend time with the family, and occasionally enjoy a few Michelob Ultras (“Mickey Low-Cals"). I also enjoy all things Seminole athletics.
Who do you admire and why?
My wife. I admire her commitment and passion for helping others personally and professionally through lobbying for criminal justice reform. The people my wife helps are people who have been judged on their worst day and she fights to make sure those people have a second chance. I’m proud of what she does and admire how she has really devoted her life to helping people who lack a voice in the community.
What is your favorite thing?
My favorite thing is quiet time. That hour or two at night once everyone has gone to sleep is my favorite thing.
What is one thing people are surprised to learn about you?
Those who have heard me sing would likely tell you I have one of the better country shower-voices on this side of the Mississippi River.
